First stop

It’s been a very, very,VERY long time coming but finally I have started to write my very own blog. It will continue to be a work in progress…a bit like me really. For all of us there is always space to learn, love and grow and I intend to do them all and hopefully you will want to do the same, in your own way, obviously.

You are probably asking ‘why this title?’, so let me explain. I actually had one of those moments that so many people talk about, where you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea. You share the idea with your inner circle and then fear prevents you moving forward. You try to conjure up smart, funny and complex titles that require further explanation to make sense to the audience. It then dawned on me that I was over complicating it!

An excellent motto is to keep it simple.

I’m blessed to live in a rural area with a garden that is graced with many birds especially the blackbird. Their appearance to some may be underwhelming but the birdsong is something to behold. The sound which escapes these small beings should be matched with a plumage of tropical colour to attract the eyes of those that dare to look. Instead they are simple graced with black feathers plus a beautiful golden beak.

There are many words used to symbolise the blackbird and the few I picked out I can relate to: mysterious, spiritual, perceptive, serious, magical and protective.

This made me think of its relation to the black woman and how we can often only be seen of judged for our exterior. The depth and tone of our black skin is beautiful and so much more lies beneath it. Like the blackbird with it glossy darks feather you need to be patient to hear the beauty it expels from it’s golden beak. If you wait a while with kindness you may get the opportunity to see more beyond our ebony depth and find that within us there is a multitude of colour. We are more than just black.

In even simpler terms, albeit less politically correct, I am a black woman and for this purpose a ‘black bird’ who chooses to finally speak out about topics of interest, past and present through conversations with other black beauties. I will also share my personal highs, some lows, reflections and life events captured in image.

Note: This blog will contain things you may not agree with or may even have a strong opinion about so, I ask that you ‘enter with curiosity and leave with kindness’.
